Think back to the buffet restaurants you ate at growing up…
I’ll admit, I even threw up at The Blue Top Restaurant all-you-can-eat Sunday buffet (at the table!) and in the bathroom at Al Johnson’s after Swedish pancakes with strawberries and whip cream, french fries, a pickle, and chocolate milk. How can I forget!?
As a kid, I can remember finishing off entire tubes of Ritz crackers, shoveling down tupperware tubs of chex mix, and literally “drinking” every last goldfish cracker directly from their silver-lined package. I’d eat 3 – 4 homemade chocolate chip cookies before they got the chance to cool down from the oven. I also became a star member of my Grandma Doreen’s “Clean Plate Club” before my two pieces of carrot cake or the pineapple cake with Cool Whip frosting.
The big truth is, if you had just been born in Japan, chances are that you wouldn’t be battling with overeating right now, or ever in your lifetime…

Here’s my point: close your eyes. One last time, try to imagine an old, wise monk eating mindlessly, maybe binging on chocolate or potato chips and a 2 liter of Coke.
In your imagination, the images just don’t seem to mesh together, right?
That’s my point. Monks learn this stuff- the vast majority of us in the Western world don’t.

The truth is, diets that fail are all about what you put in your mouth.
